Champions Fund

Michigan Athletics is proud to introduce the Champions Fund, an investment of unprecedented support in the most meaningful areas for student-athletes at the University of Michigan: counseling, career and leadership development, nutrition, athletic medicine, strength and conditioning, international travel and recruiting.

Prioritizing these areas of support is a $15 million annual investment for Michigan Athletics which receives:

  • $0 in Michigan Tax Revenue
  • $0 from the state of Michigan Budget
  • $0 from the University of Michigan Budget
  • $0 from University of Michigan Student Fees

More than 20% of the Michigan Athletics annual operating budget comes from private philanthropic donations. Without the support of our generous donors, Michigan Athletics would not be able to comprehensively support our more than 900 student-athletes.

Seven Areas of the Champions Fund

Counseling

Michigan’s Athletic Counseling team provides direct services for student-athletes who are experiencing symptoms consistent with diagnosable mental health disorders to those who are seeking ways to optimize their performance.  Athletic Counseling provides more than 2,000 individual student-athlete counseling appointments every academic year.

Nutrition

During the 2017-18 academic year, Michigan Athletics dedicated nearly $5 million towards fueling our 900 student-athletes.  Michigan Athletics’ performance nutrition team is committed to providing the best education and service to support healthy fueling habits during our student-athletes’ time at Michigan as well as preparing them for life after college athletics.

Athletic Medicine

University of Michigan student-athletes are provided with top flight medical care throughout their careers at Michigan. Student-athletes are supported by 23 full-time athletic training staff members along with the doctors and specialists of Michigan Medicine. Through this support, Michigan Athletics is committed to providing student-athletes with the best medical care possible.

Strength and Conditioning

The strength and conditioning program within Michigan Athletics provides our student-athletes with well-rounded training throughout the year that allows them to perform at their very best on gameday.  The strength and conditioning staff at Michigan tailors individual programs for each student-athlete and sport using industry accepted and scientifically supported methodologies.  Support from our generous donors allows our strength and conditioning program to remain among the best in the nation.

International Travel

Travelling abroad with their teams gives our student-athletes a unique opportunity to visit other countries and learn about other cultures that wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our donors.  Balancing athletics and academics at the University of Michigan means that our student-athletes do not have the opportunity to study abroad like many UM students.  International travel with their teams allows our student-athletes to fill that void and see the world.

Recruiting

The coaches in each of our 29 programs are tasked with finding and recruiting the very best student-athletes.  This means scouring the country and the world for individuals who will continue the tradition of excellence at Michigan in the classroom, in competition, and in life after U-M. Seventy percent of our student-athletes hail from outside of the state of Michigan which makes it imperative that our coaches have the resources to travel and find talent anywhere in the country.  Thanks to the generous support of our donors, our coaches are able to discover the best student-athletes and show them all that Michigan has to offer.

Leadership Development and Career Preparation

Michigan Athletics is committed to providing our student-athletes with the tools and resources to not only be successful during their time at Michigan, but to be prepared for life beyond athletics.  The Michigan Athletics Leadership Development and Career Preparation team offers a comprehensive program to develop our student-athletes into the leaders of tomorrow while also offering an array of professional and educational career programs aimed at providing a seamless transition to life after sports.
