On Monday, October 28, the Office of Alumni Engagement hosted a Student-Athlete Networking Event. The event invited 25 student-athlete alumni back to campus to provide guidance to current student-athletes as they prepare for life after sports. Over 75 student-athletes attended the marquee event. The event was organized in collaboration with the Michigan Professional and Career Transition (M-PACT) Program, which is overseen by Shari Acho, Director of Career Education and Advancement.
A panel discussion that featured Brad Haudan (Men’s Track & Field, ’02 – Managing Director, Root Inc.), Clay Miller (Football, ’86 – Partner, Stone Arch Capital), and Jodi Navta (Women’s Swimming & Diving, ’97 – VP Marketing & Communications, Coyote Logistics) focused on giving student-athletes advice on various topics. The discussion covered leveraging the student-athlete experience on a resume, interview tips, and how to maintain a professional network.
Students were then given the opportunity to interact with all of the alumni in the room, who represented various career fields, including: professional sports and entertainment, finance, law, public policy, health, medicine and others.
Discussions centered on how to best prepare for the transition from college to the professional world. “I heard about all the great speakers that were going to come and the people that we could network with,” explained James Yau (Movement Science, Junior, Men’s Cross Country), “and just having former Michigan Athletes to talk to makes me feel a lot more comfortable coming here.”
This event showcased one of the many ways student-athlete alumni can give back to Michigan Athletics. Miller explained, “One of the things I wished I had the ability to access when I was coming out of school was a real strong mentoring network of former alumni.” Not only were student-athletes able to garner advice from those who came before them, but a stronger link was built between multiple generations of Michigan Wolverines.
The Office of Alumni Engagement will be hosting a similar event in the spring. If you are a student-athlete alum and are interested in participating, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
