ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan Athletic Department held its inaugural Big House 5K: Trail to the Victors race on Sunday morning (April 6). A total of 4,600 runners registered to participate in the 1 mile and 5K events.
The 5K race started at Schembechler Hall and ran throughout the University’s central campus. A return to the Stephen M. Ross Athletic Campus had the race finish at the 50-yard line of Michigan Stadium.
The charity run raised more than $70,000 for six local Washtenaw County non-profit organizations. Individual runners and fundraisers donated nearly $8,500 to the six local race beneficiaries above the entry fee.
A total of $12 from each of the 4,600 registrations is being split evenly between the six race beneficiaries, and any net revenue after expenses will also be distributed evenly among the non-profit organizations. Complete race financials will be posted on MGoBlue.com no later than June 30.
Race beneficiary Team Red, White and Blue had more than 70 veterans and their families participate in the Big House 5K on Sunday. Team RWB continued its tradition of running with several American flags, including one flag that flew at an Army base in Afghanistan.
Race beneficiaries had an opportunity to raise awareness for their cause as thousands of runners stopped by to pick up their race packets throughout the afternoon on Saturday and again on Sunday after runners crossed the finish line.
