The University of Michigan ice hockey program and hockey alumnus Aaron Ward (1990-93) have partnered to announce the “Ward’s Warriors,” an initiative that will honor and recognize members of the United States military during the 2013-14 season.
At each Michigan hockey home game this season, seating will be provided in a Yost Ice Arena Champions Box providing these heroes the ultimate atmosphere to experience Michigan ice hockey. There will also be special recognition of “Ward’s Warriors” during the game on the video board.
“As a University of Michigan student-athlete, I learned at an early age that my education stretched far beyond the classroom,” Ward said. “We were taught that we were more than just part of a school, we were part of a community. As role models, we not only needed to embrace the responsibility that we had to our teammates and fellow students but also to represent ourselves with integrity on behalf of the entire community. For that reason I have always looked to honor my heroes, those men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families that have and are sacrificing and serving honorably for all of us. It gives me great pleasure to start the ‘Ward’s Warriors’ program in an attempt to show this appreciation.”
Ward played three seasons at the University of Michigan, earning All-CCHA Rookie Team honors in 1991, and All-CCHA Honorable Mention in 1992. A 15-year NHL veteran, Ward won three Stanley Cup championships during his professional career, two with the Detroit Red Wings (1997, 1998) and one with the Carolina Hurricanes (2006) before retiring in 2010.
To be selected for the Ward’s Warriors, prospective participants should fill out the corresponding form above. Entrants are asked to be as detailed as possible as to why you or your loved one deserves to be honored as one of “Ward’s Warriors.” Throughout the season 18 entries will be selected, one for each home game. Each person selected will receive six (6) tickets to a Michigan ice hockey game with seating in one of Yost Ice Arena’s Champions Boxes. In addition, each representative will receive special recognition on the video board during the game, as well as a concession credit.
Please note, due to NCAA regulations, guests of the individual selected cannot be in grades 9-12.
