In true University of Michigan fashion, Sunday’s winter graduation ceremony at Crisler Center wasn’t a ceremonial wrap-up of the U-M students’ academic efforts; it was a forward-looking event that motivates for the future. It was an event that matters. It is the culmination of their hard work at Michigan and hopefully that will affect their ideals down the road.
For most of the graduating U-M student-athletes, the achievement of the scholarship and their competitive juices for their sport will recede into the background. They will move forward into a chosen profession aided by the lessons they learned in the classroom and through sports.
Games won or lost on the field of varsity sports competition are pretty much over, and the real world waits. We want all of our student-athlete alumni to succeed and in order to help them in their future plans our Office of Alumni Engagement will work to stay connected with everyone who has competed for the Maize and Blue.
On Sunday afternoon, the U-M Athletic Department hosted its first Student-Athlete Graduation Reception at the William Davidson Player Development Center. Our student-athletes compete and represent Michigan Athletics with the utmost integrity and respect. It is also one more step in developing a strong Office of Alumni Engagement, and creating a positive experience they can take with them after graduation.
We want these student-athletes to know we appreciate what they have accomplished as part of the Wolverine team, and Sunday’s post-graduation reception was just one way to express our gratitude for what they have accomplished on and off the field of varsity competition.
For decades now, U-M student-athletes have lived and loved Michigan Athletics. The continuing success of our athletic department is dependent on what they have accomplished and what our student-athlete alumni can accomplish.
Now the graduates take on a new role. They become our ambassadors. They are the representatives of our Michigan tradition.
Graduation Day is memorable, and we want all our current student-athletes and student-athlete alumni to know their years at U-M were memorable for everyone on the Michigan Athletic team too. The Office of Alumni Engagement Reception is a small token of our appreciation.
For those student-athletes who graduated Sunday, we wish them good fortune in their future endeavors.
Regardless of how far they will travel in life, Michigan Athletics will always be their home, and we encourage them to stay connected and involved in helping to further the legacy of Michigan.
Congratulations! Go Blue!
