Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced Tuesday, Sept. 18 that University of Michigan fifth-year senior offensive lineman Patrick Omameh (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) has been selected to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, honoring dedicated and hard-working student-athletes for their off-the-field achievements and selfless contributions to their communities. Omameh is the second Wolverine to be named to the Good Works Team since its inception in 1992. Former U-M punter Zoltan Mesko was named to the 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Omameh, one of 11 student-athletes from the Football Bowl Subdivision — and one of two Big Ten players, joining Nebraska’s Rex Burkhead — named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, has started 32 consecutive games at right guard for the Wolverines. Double-majoring in communications and sociology with a concentration in business administration in U-M’s College of Literature, Science and the Arts, he is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Off the field, Omameh visits the U-M Mott Children’s Hospital weekly and participates with numerous service groups and charitable causes, including Relay for Life, Victors Day and From the Heart. He also has visited the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and has participated in several other fundraising events, such as the David Mealer Memorial Golf Classic and “Bowling for Camp Mitchitanki.” Omameh also was selected to the Order of Angell, Class of 2012, which includes leaders from a variety of campus organizations.
In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining good academic standing. Candidates must also display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Neither athletic ability nor on-the-field achievements are among the selection criteria.
Fans will have the opportunity to vote for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® Captain by visiting ESPN.com and searching “Good Works.” Fans can learn more about this year’s team members and their charitable accomplishments by viewing player profiles on the website. The Team Captain and his fellow award recipients will be invited to New Orleans to take part in a special youth football clinic leading up to the 2013 Allstate® Sugar Bowl®.
